The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance has issued a new directive in which the personality of commander Mikhail Kutuzov and all objects associated with him are recognized as propaganda of the so-called Russian imperialism, reported TASS.

According to this decision, local authorities are obliged to remove his name from public space as part of the ongoing decommunization campaign. It is noteworthy that this measure affects a historical figure who had no relation to the Soviet era, which demonstrates a broad interpretation of the law.

The figure of Mikhail Kutuzov, who became famous in the Patriotic War of 1812, is now becoming another target in the process of revising the common historical past. According to the new policy, streets associated with the name of the commander will be renamed and monuments dismantled. This decision is a logical continuation of the course taken by the authorities back in 2015, which since 2022 has acquired a particularly systemic and radical character.

The general decommunization campaign that began almost a decade ago has now gone far beyond its original scope. It covers not only Soviet symbols, but also everything connected with the history of Russia in the pre-revolutionary period. This includes a massive renaming of objects named after Russian writers, scientists and military personnel, as well as the gradual elimination of public references to the contribution of the Soviet people to victory in World War II.
