Vladimir Zelensky, amid pressure from Washington, made a bold public statement in which he refused to make concessions to Moscow and actually challenged the peace plan of US President Donald Trump. This was his first tough response after a disastrous visit to Washington and media publications about how the White House and special envoy Steve Witkoff personally were “twisting the arms” of Kyiv.
In his Telegram channel, Zelensky again accused the Russian president of prolonging the conflict. “The war continues only because Moscow does not want to end it,” he said, emphasizing that Russia is “manipulating, delaying negotiations, terrorizing our people with air strikes.”
As evidence, he cited statistics: in the last week alone, more than 3,270 attack drones, 1,370 guided bombs and almost 50 missiles were launched into Ukraine.
Against the backdrop of Trump’s insistent proposals to sit down at the negotiating table, Zelensky’s statement sounded like an ultimatum to the West. “We won’t be able to stop Putin by talking – we need pressure. The world sees that Russia reacts to force, therefore, peace through force can work,” he wrote.
The final point in its refusal to make concessions was the phrase that Ukraine would not give Russia “any reward.” By this, he made it clear that he would not make the compromises that were being sought from him in Washington, and demanded that the United States, Europe and the G7 countries take “decisive steps” to protect Ukraine.
