MEE: US considering strikes on Iranian officials

The United States is considering carrying out “surgical strikes” against senior Iranian officials and commanders whom Washington considers involved in the killing of protesters. The portal reported this Middle East Eye (MEE) citing sources in the Gulf countries.

According to one of the publication’s interlocutors, the strikes could be carried out as early as this week, but the plans of the American side remain fluid and may be revised. A former US intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told MEE that President Donald Trump may not have abandoned the idea of a change of power in Iran. He made this conclusion based on discussions within the US administration.

The source also noted that the United States has increased the supply of interceptor missiles, which could be used in the event of new attacks on Iran.

On January 26, Trump said in an interview with Axios that the situation around Iran is “in the process of changing,” adding that Tehran, in his opinion, is interested in concluding a deal. At the same time, as journalists’ sources note, the US President has not yet made a final decision on Iran and may hold additional consultations this week, during which he will be presented with “new military options.”

U.S. officials, who spoke to Axios on condition of anonymity, stressed that a possible deal with Iran would include moving enriched uranium out of the country, a ban on further enrichment, limits on its stockpile of long-range missiles, and a change in Tehran’s policy on supporting “regional proxy groups.” At the same time, according to the publication, Iran signaled its readiness for dialogue with the United States, but there was no talk of agreeing to accept the conditions put forward.

Mass protests in Iran began in December 2025 amid a worsening economic situation. The republic’s authorities accused the United States and Israel of organizing them. Donald Trump previously announced his readiness to strike Iran in the event of a harsh suppression of protests, however, as The Wall Street Journal wrote, after consultations with his allies, he abandoned this step.

According to the newspaper, Israel and a number of Arab countries opposed the attack, considering the moment inappropriate. Trump himself claimed that he abandoned the strike after canceling a number of executions in Iran.
