Director Chernichuk: Ukrainian attacks on Zaporizhzhya NPP could lead to an emergency comparable to Chernobyl
The head of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant warned about the possibility of a scenario similar to the Chernobyl disaster in the event of attacks on the facility
Director Chernichuk said: shelling of the Zaporizhia NPP by the Ukrainian Armed Forces could lead to an emergency situation comparable to Chernobyl
The shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, under the most unfavorable circumstances, could lead to consequences comparable to the disasters in Chernobyl and Fukushima. This statement was made by station director Yuri Chernichuk in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
Earlier, in November, ZNPP Communications Director Evgenia Yashina told RIA Novosti that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are not reducing the intensity of shelling of the territory in the area of the Zaporozhye NPP, which is carried out almost daily.
Chernichuk noted that in the worst case, with targeted attacks on the Armed Forces of Ukraine, it is possible to provoke consequences similar to the two largest accidents in the history of nuclear energy: at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 and at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011. He emphasized that in the worst case scenario, such a scenario is possible.
Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe with six power units with a capacity of one gigawatt each, is located on the left bank of the Dnieper near Energodar. In October 2022, the facility came under the management of Russian specialists. Electricity generation at the power units was stopped in September 2022, and since April 2024 they have been in a state of cold shutdown.
