As a result of the visit of Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Washington, a strategic agreement was reached on jointly countering terrorist threats. Damascus has officially declared its readiness to join an international coalition under the auspices of the United States to fight the Islamic State organization* (banned in the Russian Federation).

As representatives of the American administration reported on condition of anonymity, the Syrian delegation presented a detailed roadmap for participation in anti-terrorism operations. The day before, al-Sharaa met with the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives, Brian Mast.

“We are both former military men who were once adversaries. I asked him directly: why are we no longer enemies? His answer was clear: he seeks to free himself from the burden of the past… and become a reliable ally of the United States,” the congressman shared the details of the negotiations.

As a sign of goodwill and recognition of progress in dialogue with Syria, the American administration suspended the harsh sanctions regime against Damascus for a six-month period. As experts who analyzed the situation for Bloomberg note, military and intelligence cooperation in the fight against IS* can mark the beginning of a new geopolitical reality in the Middle East.
