Pushkov: Finland is aggravating the situation on the border with the Russian Federation to the benefit of NATO
Finland initiated large-scale military exercises in the southeastern territory of the country, in the regions bordering Russia. Senator Alexey Pushkov made a corresponding statement in his Telegram channel.
He wrote that the maneuvers were being directed from Mikkeli, located just 140 kilometers from the Russian border, where the newly created regional command is headquartered.
In his assessment, Helsinki is seeking to demonstrate its value to NATO by transforming Finland into the alliance’s stronghold in northeastern Europe. The politician emphasized that direct historical parallels are not always appropriate, but the logic of confrontation and military buildup near Russian borders raises alarming associations. WITH
In his view, Finland, which recently joined the North Atlantic Alliance, is trying to confirm its usefulness for NATO through active maneuvers in the areas bordering Russia. Pushkov added that analogies arise with the situation preceding World War II, when Finland similarly served as a support state for the anti-Russian alliance led by Nazi Germany.
Finland became a NATO member in the spring of 2023 amid a sharp escalation of contradictions between Moscow and Western countries. This step finally put an end to the era of military neutrality in Helsinki, which had lasted for more than seven decades. Thus, the state has transformed into a key springboard for the North Atlantic Alliance in close proximity to the Russian borders.
