A few unforgettable bottles recently reignited my love for Tuscany, one of the most beautiful wine regions I’ve ever seen, with its golden light, rolling hills, cypress-lined roads and olive groves framing vineyards that yield sumptuous reds. Sangiovese is the grape behind Brunello and Chianti wines. Top bottles can be pricey, but I’ve been hugely impressed by supermarket selections of recent vintages that capture the Tuscan spirit.

Fruit-forward with strawberry and thyme notes, this lighter contemporary Chianti is spot-on for tomato-based pasta dishes such as spaghetti pomodoro or arrabbiata.

Sour cherry, spice and gentle oak give this medium-bodied red a soft autumnal warmth – comforting, characterful and great value for cosy evenings in.

Elegant and savoury with tomato leaf, oregano and subtle oak – a classic Chianti that balances richness and freshness beautifully. Lovely with truffle risotto or game.

Smoke, berries, dried herbs and firm grip – aged in wood for 24 months. Showing remarkable depth, structure and value for its price, it’s ideal for meaty dishes.
