Is YOUR handbag making you look old? The styles that instantly date you and even expensive Chanel handbags are a problem

Women talk a lot about anti-ageing skincare for a youthful boost. Or we’ll update our hair, or rethink our jeans. But the one thing quietly ageing many women? Their handbag.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, UK-based celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot revealed how the accessory could be a telltale sign of how old you really are to others – and worse, could even be ageing you.
Even a designer investment could be doing more harm than good, she warned.
‘This isn’t about price. I’ve seen £2,500 designer bags age someone faster than a £49 High Street find, purely because the style either feels too old, or too young, for them,’ explained the stylist.
‘Your handbag often sits at eye level, or it frames your body, and it signals whether you feel current and self-assured – or whether you’re holding onto something that no longer reflects who you are.’

The classic flap handbag
Lisa shared: ‘The bag that used to feel iconic… but now feels predictable. The Chanel Classic Flap is undeniably beautiful. It’s heritage. It’s investment dressing.
‘But here’s the uncomfortable truth: when it’s heavily quilted, worn on a long chain strap and paired with equally traditional pieces, it can tip into safe and expected, particularly on women over 40.’
Why it ages you
She explained that, typically, the blame lies in styling – wearing it with a tweed jacket, structured dress and court shoes feels ‘matronly’, whereas the key should be a more chilled look.
What to wear instead
‘If it’s worn with relaxed tailoring, straight-leg denim and modern loafers? It suddenly feels relevant again,’ the stylist added. ‘The rule: Classics need contrast.’
The logo bag that screams 2008

‘The Louis Vuitton Speedy in traditional brown monogram was once the ultimate status symbol,’ Lisa said. ‘Now? When carried as the main feature of an outfit, it can feel nostalgic and not in a good way.’
She said that ‘the same applies to very logo-heavy pieces like the Gucci Marmont when the hardware is oversized and the quilting exaggerated’.
Why it ages you
The bag acts a touch like a time-machine – anchoring you to a specific fashion era.
What to wear instead
‘If you love designer, choose quieter leather versions, smaller hardware, or more contemporary silhouettes,’ she advised. ‘Luxury should whisper, not shout.’
The oversized slouch tote
Another look that immediately throws you back into an era is the Balenciaga City Bag – which was everywhere in the noughties, and adored for its soft, slouchy and studded vibe.
‘At the time, it felt edgy,’ Lisa explained. ‘Today, unless styled very deliberately, it can look like you simply haven’t updated your accessories in 15 years.
‘The same goes for very soft, unstructured totes that collapse in on themselves.’
Why it ages you
‘Structure equals polish,’ Lisa said. ‘Slouch equals overwhelm. If your bag is dragging your shoulder down visually, it’s dragging your whole look down too.’
What to wear instead
‘A structured medium tote or a clean, modern shoulder bag that holds its shape,’ the stylist suggested.

Over-compartmentalised handbags from the High Street
Another one of Lisa’s no-go was ‘very boxy styles’ and ‘overly practical shoulder bags from Next, or soft bucket bags from Mango that lack structure’.
Why it ages you
These are ‘often black, often with lots of zips, and often chosen because they’re “useful”‘, the stylist explained.
‘But practicality without intention can age you faster than a wrinkle.’
What to wear instead
Lisa suggested that, even on the High Street, choose clean lines, minimal hardware and beautiful texture. ‘Structure is what elevates affordable,’ she said.
