A mom has sparked a fierce debate after she revealed she wasn’t buying anything new for her kids for Christmas this year in a bid to ‘lower her contribution to consumerism.’
The mom, named Jade, announced in a now-viral TikTok video shared earlier this month that she had thrifted all the holiday gifts she got for her four children.
The budget-savvy mother also proudly revealed that had set a budget of $100 total for her entire Christmas spending.
‘Is that insane? Probably,’ Jade boldly stated.
‘We refuse to go into debt over Christmas and we really want to go on a nice vacation next year and I feel like with how expensive everything is you almost can’t have both and we would rather travel,’ she added.
She explained that she tried to budget her Christmas gifts last year, but didn’t really keep track of how much she spent in the end so this year she wanted to stick to $100.
She then showed off some of her thrifted gifts, which included a $3 alphabet puzzle, a musical jewelry box for $4.50, a unicorn zip up for $2, a book for 50 cents as well as a plastic shopping cart she proclaimed she would fill from shopping boxes lying around at home.
Predicting incoming backlash, the unapologetic user declared preemptively, ‘Call me cheap, whatever, I don’t care.’

The video set the internet ablaze and launched a massive conversation about Christmas gifts.
Not everyone seems to be on board with her festive frugality as users were rapid to fire criticism and contempt at her stripped down approach in the comment section.
‘You knew Christmas was coming all year. Learn to budget it in,’ one critic said.
‘I think even $50 per child is good but $25 per child? Yeah that’s insane. It’s their childhood memories too,’ another reprimanded the budget-minded mother.
‘People need to stop having kids if they can’t afford them omg,’ another enraged user quipped.
‘Life is short and it moves so quickly. These children are going to remember this about you. Is that what you want?’ a fourth penned.
The mother was quick to retaliate to the comments criticizing her decision, showing no remorse as she penned, ‘There is a lot of people every year who take on debt from Christmas on their already growing pile of debt. I don’t have debt, I don’t want to create it. And people don’t like that. Wild lol.’
Others seemed to be in favor of Jade’s ‘Thriftmas,’ congratulating the mother for her sustainable and cost effective mindset.

‘I wish Thriftmas was more common, we truly are ruining the world,’ said one supporter.
‘As an older parent trust me the vacation will mean so much more,’ congratulated another.
‘I think you’re smart. Crazy how much debt people go in for Christmas. Each year gets worse and worse’ a third praised.
A fourth said: ‘The kids aren’t going to know where it comes from. They will grow out of it but they will remember waking up to gifts. Go mama’.
