A small chip shop in Melbourne has been crowned home to the best potato scallops in the country.

Northern Soul, a British and Irish-style chippy in St Kilda, is famous for its hand-battered potato cakes.

They come with a choice of five seasonings – regular salt, chicken salt, prawn cocktail, salt and vinegar, or spicebag.

Food content creator Ross James Howse said the scallops are ‘unbeatable’.

‘The batter is like honeycomb, solid gold crunch, drenched in chicken salt, with a soft and seasoned potato centre,’ he wrote on his food review account Bangin Sang.

‘Potato cakes the size of your head and beautifully priced at $2.50.’

He also praised the shop’s curry sauce.

‘Curry sauce is fundamental when visiting, in my opinion, the best fish and chips in Melbourne,’ he said.

Locals and tourists agree.

‘This looks so epic. It’s definitely on my list for my next Melbourne trip,’ one fan wrote.

‘I’ll wait hours for Northern Soul if I have to. Their fish and chips are so good. Made me realise most fish and chip shop is just a scam,’ another said.

Others raved about the extras.

‘The curry sauce is superb,’ one customer wrote.

‘I need this. I’m pregnant and I can’t stop thinking about them,’ a soon-to-be mum said.

Northern Soul has been a favourite in St Kilda for more than a decade.

The owners, originally from Manchester with Irish roots, say they missed a proper chippy tea when they moved to Melbourne.

In 2012 they quit their day jobs, converted a 1970s caravan into a food truck, and eventually set up shop in St Kilda.

Now, the venue is considered the closest thing to a British chippy in Australia.

Fans say the batter is always crunchy, the servings are huge, and the potato scallops are worth the trip alone.

At just $2.50 each, they’ve become a cult favourite – especially with curry sauce on the side.
