A shooter opened fired on an an ICE field office in Dallas from a nearby rooftop on Wednesday morning, killing one detainee and critically wounding two others, the Department of Homeland Security said.

The agency had said earlier that two detainees were killed and one was wounded.

The suspected shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind ammunition inscribed with the words “ANTI ICE” in blue writing, officials said. FBI Director Kash Patel posted a photo of the ammunition on his X account, saying it indicated an ideological motive. No members of law enforcement were hurt in the attack.

The name of the gunman, who the Department of Homeland Security described in a statement as a “sniper,” has not been released. The gunman fired indiscriminately at the ICE building, as well as at a van in an entrance where the victims were shot, the statement said.

The city’s police chief, Daniel Comeaux, said at about 6:40 a.m. local time, police received an assist the officer call.

At a news conference hours after the shooting, Joseph Rothrock, the head of the FBI field office in Dallas, said the FBI was investigating the shooting as an act of targeted violence.

Authorities declined to answer questions about the victims.

Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of homeland security, has said the building had received a “viable” bomb threat a month ago.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz was among the elected officials at the news conference to call for an end to politically motivated violence.

“This needs to stop. Violence is wrong. Politically motivated violence is wrong,” Cruz said. “We should not be putting language out there that inspires madmen to commit evil crimes.”

The facility is typically used to process detainees after they have been arrested and before they are taken to a long-term detention facility, officials said.
